Prematurity Prevention Initiative Cohosts Screening of ‘The Ebony Canal’ Documentary

In observance of Black Maternal Health Week in April 2026, the Prematurity Prevention Initiative, in partnership with March of Dimes NY/NJ, hosted a screening of the powerful, award-winning documentary The Ebony Canal at Kean University.
The Ebony Canal, a NAACP Image Award and two-time Emmy Award-winning film, explores both the historical roots and present-day realities of disparities in infant mortality and maternal health outcomes impacting Black women. Through compelling storytelling and research, the documentary highlights systemic inequities while amplifying the voices and experiences of Black mothers.
Following the screening, attendees participated in a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Roxy Romeo, National Radio Talent and Maternal Health Advocate. The panel featured a diverse group of leaders and advocates, including Emmai Alaquiva, Director of The Ebony Canal, Alana Yzola-Daly, featured mother in The Ebony Canal, Dr. Nastassia Harris, Founder and Executive Director of the Perinatal Health Equity Initiative, Lamman Rucker of The Black Gents and Kenn Harris, CEO and Founder of The League of Voices for Mothers, Babies, Fathers & Families.
